The central alleyway in the cemetery follows the axis of the church tower. The vast area of Les Terres Blanches connects both visually and functionally with the town centre as long as the way through through the cemetery is clear. Replacing the old gates, which were solid and characterless, with new see-through ones, has made it possible to bring into play the great archway and the proportions of the church’s symmetrically opposite side door. Its chevron design recalls the porchway gates.
This redevelopment and others – a new avenue and road – has ‘stitched’ the new area and the old one together, as well as giving the lower cemetery area a greater sense of dignity and making it easier to move through.
