La photographie des frères Sanchez représente deux chiens qui sont sur le point d’attaquer leur proie. Sous cette image anecdotique se cache cependant une gigantesque mise en scène : mise en scène de l’image d’abord, qui reprend ici le cadre médiatique pour soumettre au public une proposition esthétique hyperréaliste; ensuite, mise en scène factice de l’action représentée qui a été entièrement créée en studio à l’aide d’un éleveur de chiens.
Natural Selection rappelle la saisie d’image cinématographique. En fixant un moment narratif névralgique d’une dramatisation, l’œuvre médiatise un événement inventé comme pour rendre visible l’illusion de la réalité propre au médium, autant photographique que publicitaire. Elle va également de pair avec la pratique photographique des artistes qui, se situant en porte-à-faux entre le réel et la fiction, est marquée par la monstration d’images violentes.

L’œuvre s’inscrit dans le projet Plan large qui a pour objectif de favoriser le rayonnement de l’art contemporain dans le quartier en consacrant certains espaces d’affichage à l’art. Depuis 2001, grâce à cette initiative du Quartier éphémère, trois panneaux destinés à l’origine à recevoir de la publicité sont maintenant occupés de manière permanente par des œuvres.

The Sanchez Brother’s photograph represents two dogs on the point of attacking their prey. However, this anecdotal image is a huge set up. For a start, the image, of a hyperrealist aesthetic, is presented to the public in a media context. And, the represented action, created entirely in the studio with the help of the dogs’ trainer, is a sham.

Natural Selection suggests an image captured on film. By freezing a startling moment in a dramatic narrative, the work mediatises a fabricated event to present the illusion of reality that is inherent in both photography and advertising. This also goes hand in hand with the photographic practice of artists that, balancing precariously between reality and fiction, is characterized by showing violent images.

The work was part of Plan large project that has the objective of showing contemporary art on some of the neighbourhood billboards. Since 2001, through Quartier éphémère’s initiative, artworks continuously occupy three panels initially made for advertising.
