Photo : 1 2 3 This project was originally conceived in 1985 for a competition in Almere, Holland, on the theme “temporary living” where it received the third prize. The work consists of 6 modules each measuring 6 m x 6 m x 5 m high. The first one is made of wood planks covered with climbing vegetation changing with the seasons. The second – for summer living - consists of very densely pruned plantings covering a hard surface. The third is made of woodchips and vegetation recycled from the summer module. In the fourth module, fermentation and composting generate heat for the living space, while a motor blows in the hot air and blows out the cold. The work is both a space for living and a space for production It constantly evolves. “Broei” was realized in 1993 in the educational park of Cronesteijn in Leiden.
