During WWII, concrete bunkers were built along some of the western coasts of Europe. Many of these defensive military works are still around today on beaches along the Atlantic and the Baltic seas, including in Thyboron.
Fifty years later, the artist proposed to recycle one of these bunkers and use it to protect the coast against the natural forces of the sea. Remains of bunkers were cast into 4 ton concrete blocks and placed as protective barriers against erosion along the Danish coast. These former symbols of war became transformed into sentinels of peace.
This project was commissioned for the 1995 Fredsskulptur symposium of 1995 (Sculpture for Peace.)
